Sip your way to skin health this spring

Spring is traditionally a time for new life and renewal.  Envision spring to be a time for weeding the garden (de-cluttering and cleaning) and for sowing the seeds and establishing roots (setting intentions and cultivating new positive routines) for the season ahead after the months of hibernation and stagnation that is winter.

In the southern hemisphere, the earth is getting closer to the sun and the days are getting longer.  The long cold darkness of winter is fading but the heaviness can still remain with us for a time.  This can reflect in our bodies, our minds, our homes and in our relationships with others.

Our skin may appear dull or feel itchy with the change of season, so to help brighten and improve our complexion we need to care for not just what is happening on the outside, but what is happening on the inside too.  Preparing and drinking a simple remedy of spiced decoction can help flush the lymphatic system, enliven digestion and support clearing of the skin.

Traditionally, in ayurvedic medicine a drink like this can be taken for fourteen days consecutively, particularly at seasonal changes to support robust health and natural cleansing.

Cleansing Decoction

Add the following spices to 3L of water in a large saucepan:

5 cm piece of ginger, sliced
4 green cardamom pods
1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
1 teaspoon of coriander seeds
1 cinnamon stick

Reduce the decoction to 1.5L by boiling for about 30minutes.  Strain and drink warm throughout the day.

As Tatiana says, skin health is so much more than the lotions and potions you choose to put on your skin.  It’s requires a holistic approach - unique for you - so that you can glow from the inside out.
